It started out as typical Monday night family time..except that it was almost Halloween. There was the cutesy cousin costume match (match the cousin to the costume he's going to wear); Jack O'Lanterns to be carved: boys against the girls. Two faces on the girls pumpkin, because there was dissention in the ranks.
This was not going to be an ordinary celebration.
It was time to start the Churro's. Yes, for Halloween! Smokey put me up to it and I wasn't hard to convince. They looked good and hey how hard could they be?
The kids thought I was making Churro's, but I was really starting up a brew, and soon came the Smoke Monster…I mean--who knew. Who knew that I wouldn't find-- the biggest pastery tip? Who knew you're not suppose to mix used and unused oil? Who knew that used oil has a lower smoking point? Smokey knew.
I was making baby churro's. The dough was so thick. I pushed hard to get it through--- the small pastry tip. But it backfired--and to my hands it did stick. A little smoke starts. The oil begins to brew. Little churro, little churro, what am I to do? Search for a bigger tip as the oil brews. Who knew the longer and hotter the oil burns, the more it's going to smoke? Who knew about the oil's smoking point? ……….. Smokey knew.
This was Smokey's plan. He hadn't been out for awhile…and this is the time of year…to meet his friends in his spooky file.
First he's in the kitchen, then he fills the dining room. We get out our smoke fans: 1, 2, 3 and send the young ones to the bedroom while we get the house Smoke Monster free. We open the doors, we open the windows. We try to suck him out…we will not be spooked by the Smoke Monster, but we can't get him out. Turn off the oven, take the pot out back. Too late, Smokey has filled the house. Everyone to the front of the house. Take the pumpkins too. Stay outside. The Smoke Monster will not crash our Halloween Celebration. He will not eat the Churro's. We will wait him out! He starts to slip away, but wants to linger near, for there is sugar on the Churro's, he did hear. Safety is ensured by sleeping on the couch, so that when we breath in we won't say "ouch". The Smoke Monster slowly slips away to meet his spooky friends or maybe to find you. So if you'd like to see him make a churro or two.
